Over the past week the coaching staff has been working on implementing a faster offense for its outside hitters and middle blockers, which looked great in the first game. The Eagles executed well and finished with a win of 26-24 and 18 kills in Set 1.
In Set 2, nothing seemed to go their way, with the Eagles earning only two kills in a game filled with service, passing, and defensive errors. LAMC was unable to bounce back and ended up losing the third set 22-25 and the fourth set 20-25.
While they did achieve a season high of 80 digs during the match, there was an obvious absence of energy that the Eagles usually bring on defense. Many times players were caught on their heels unable to get to balls hit off the block or offspeed at them into open areas. They also had 12 serve reception errors which made it difficult to run the faster offense. However, when in system, the team looked like they had improved significantly.
Sophomore libero Samantha Sullivan led the team in digs with 21, and freshman outside hitter Stephanie Rodriquez led the offense with 15 kills. Freshman middle blocker Alexis Hernandez also played a great offensive game with a career high 10 kills, hitting a .300 kill percentage.
The Eagles are 8-6 on the season, and coach Richard Barraza says the team needs to recharge and get focused before the beginning of conference play next week.
The first game of conference will be an away match on Friday, Oct. 13, against a strong Bakersfield College at 6 p.m.
