Mission Volleyball Extends Perfect Season with Sweep Over Santa Monica SYLMAR, CA — September 17, 2025 The LA Mission College women’s volleyball team continued their dominant 2025-26 campaign with a commanding 3-0 sweep over visiting Santa Monica College on Wednesday evening at the Eagles Nest. With set scores of 25-23, 25-23, and 25-21, the Eagles improve to 14-0 on the season, maintaining their unblemished record and top form heading into conference play.
Big Nights on Both Sides of the Net
Though Santa Monica matched up well on paper—posting an impressive .243 team hitting percentage—the Eagles responded with relentless defensive pressure and key scoring runs to stay in control throughout all three sets.
Sophomore middle blocker Amya Cheatham January led the way for Mission, finishing with 9 kills on a scorching .471 hitting percentage, while adding 4 solo blocks and 4 block assists to total 15.0 points.
Outside hitter Tawnie Ohrt continued her consistent play with 11 kills and a team-high 12.0 points, while Madison Perry added 10 kills and 6 digs in another all-around performance.
Defense Makes the Difference
Despite being out-killed by Santa Monica (45-37), Mission's defensive execution proved to be the deciding factor. The Eagles racked up 74 digs as a team, with standout libero Sofia Vazquez tallying a match-high 25 digs to keep rallies alive and shut down Santa Monica's hitters.
Setter Rio Sandaiji orchestrated the offense with 31 assists, while also contributing 3 service aces and 17 digs, showcasing her ability to impact all phases of the game.
At the net, Mission totaled 12 blocks (7 solo, 10 assisted), holding Santa Monica to just 21 points in the final set as they closed out the match with a strong defensive push.
Service Game Stays Sharp
The Eagles once again impressed from the service line, delivering 9 aces without committing a single service error—highlighting the team's discipline and tactical precision. Camila Santiago added 3 aces, while Sandaiji, Vasquez, and Tapia each chipped in one apiece.
